The Store Opening Checklist: Shelving, Lighting, Window Display, Layout
Before opening day, shelving systems, lighting, the window display, customer flow and the checkout area all need to be checked one by one. Here is the complete checklist for a store that's genuinely ready to open.

What must be checked before a store opens: the installation and stability of the shelving systems, the lighting plan, the window display, customer flow and aisle widths, the checkout/payment area, price labeling, and a final clean. The checklist below exists so that nothing slips through the cracks in the rush before opening day.
1. Shelving and display systems
- Are all gondolas and wall shelving level and firmly fixed?
- Have shelf heights been adjusted to match product heights?
- Are heavy products on the lower shelves, with light and feature products at eye level?
- Are the checkout stand and impulse products ready?
2. Lighting
- Is the general lighting even and shadow-free?
- Is there accent (spot) lighting on the window display and hero products?
- Does the color temperature suit the product type? (warm for food, neutral/cool for tech)
3. Window display
- Does the window tell your store's story within the first 5 seconds?
- Is the seasonal/promotional message clear?
- Have glass cleaning and lighting reflections been checked?
4. Customer flow and layout
- Is the entrance open and inviting, with nothing blocking it?
- Are aisles at least 90–120 cm wide?
- Is there a flow that draws customers into the depth of the store?
5. Checkout and operations
- Is the checkout close to the exit, with a manageable queue?
- Are bags, packaging and operational supplies in place?
The final 48 hours before opening
| When | To do |
|---|---|
| 48 hours out | All product placement and price labeling completed |
| 24 hours out | Final lighting + window display, trial run of the store |
| Opening day | General clean, staff briefing, final walk-through |
