What to Look for When Choosing Pharmacy Shelving Systems

Pharmacy shelving puts fast access, hygiene, dense stock capacity and medicine safety first. We've compiled the criteria that matter when choosing shelving built specifically for pharmacies.

What to Look for When Choosing Pharmacy Shelving Systems

When choosing pharmacy shelving systems, the criteria to prioritize are: fast, easy access; high capacity that keeps dense stock in order; hygienic, easy-clean surfaces; adjustable shelf levels that let you categorize medicines; and a clear separation between prescription and OTC areas. In a pharmacy, shelving determines back-office operating speed far more than it does window display.

What sets pharmacies apart from other sectors

A pharmacy carries a huge number of products, packaging is small, and speed of access is critical. To keep a customer from waiting, the pharmacist has to reach the requested medicine within seconds. That's why pharmacy shelving is planned with shallow depth but many closely spaced levels.

The criteria to watch

1. Back-area (stock) shelving

  • Many closely spaced levels: shelf spacing must adjust finely (a 25 mm hole pitch is ideal) so small boxes line up without wasting space.
  • Shallow depth: a depth of 25–30 cm keeps medicines from getting lost front-to-back.
  • Labelling strip: being able to clip code/name labels to the shelf edge keeps the order intact.

2. Drawer units

Drawer systems speed up access to frequently dispensed medicines. Compartmented drawers keep small packages from getting mixed up.

3. Front-area (customer) display

For dermocosmetics, vitamins and personal care products, illuminated wall shelving and front-of-checkout stands are used. These products grow a pharmacy's add-on sales; they should sit at eye level and be well lit.

4. Hygiene and materials

Surfaces should be easy to wipe down, with electrostatic powder coating or laminate finish. Counter and shelf joints are designed so they don't collect dust.
