What Is Turnkey Store Design, and How Does the Process Work?

Turnkey store design means one team runs every step: site survey, 3D design, production, installation and handover. We walk through each stage of the process and its advantages, step by step.

What Is Turnkey Store Design, and How Does the Process Work?

Turnkey store design means that everything — starting with a free site visit and measurement, then 3D design, production, delivery, installation and the final check and handover — is carried out by a single team. The business owner never has to juggle separate suppliers (architect, joiner, installation crew); the store is handed over ready to open, keys in hand.

Why choose turnkey?

Its biggest advantage is single-point responsibility. Because the team that designs the store also manufactures and installs it, mismatches like "it was in the design but not in the build" simply disappear. The business owner deals with one counterpart and is freed from the burden of time and coordination.

How does the process work, step by step?

1. Free site visit and measurement

The team measures the store on site; floor area, ceiling height, column and window positions, electrical and shopfront conditions are all recorded. This step is critical — every decision that follows rests on it, and it's also why the shelving is made to your exact measurements rather than pulled from mass-produced stock.

2. Needs analysis and concept

Sector, target audience, product range and budget are discussed. Which sections go where, the checkout position and the customer flow are decided at this stage.

3. 3D design and approval

Before a single shelf is mounted, the store is visualized in 3D. Colors, materials, lighting and shelf layout appear on screen; revisions at this stage are free and fast.

4. Production

Based on the approved design, the gondolas, wall shelving and custom units are manufactured. Standard modules and store-specific pieces are planned together.

5. Installation and handover

Delivery and installation are handled by the team; lighting, shopfront and accessories are put in place. After the final check, the store is handed over ready for opening.

How long does the process take?

StageTypical duration
Site visit + needs analysis1–2 days
3D design + revisions3–7 days
Production1–3 weeks (depending on scope)
Installation + handover2–5 days

Timelines vary with store size and the share of custom production; a small store can open within a few weeks, while larger projects are planned over a longer schedule.

What should you check before opening?

An opening checklist helps you wrap up the turnkey process without loose ends: shelf installation and levelling, lighting, shopfront, customer flow and the checkout area should each get a final walkthrough. As for the items that drive the budget, we've broken them down in our article on what determines store shelving prices.
